Hi guys

I'm planning apply Update 2 complete to my VSphere plataform using Update Manager. My suite contains:

7 ESXi hosts 5.1.0

1 vCenter (with a remote SQL Server database)

1 Site Recovery Manager (with a remote SQL Server database)

1 Operations Manager

1 Infrastructure Navigator

Also, i have a remote datacenter with 3 ESXi host (5.1.0 too) for DRP purposes.

I need your wisdom and experiencie, because I've never apply any patch on my ESXi hosts.

Do you have a tip, a document, advices or something to take into account?

Thanks

Trying to understand how a network loop occurred..

I'm sure I won't be providing nearly enough information, but hopefully can fill in the blanks where needed.  Had an issue in our ESXi 5.1 environment a couple days ago where our Cisco Nexus switches observed a network loop and went into some sort of state where traffic wasn't being properly forwarded (presumably STP kicked in and stopped forwarding on certain key uplinks).  Solution ended up being the reboot of one of the Nexus switches.  We aren't the network team but are trying to wrap our heads around what may or may not have happened.

We have a Dell Blade Center with dual Force10 switches in it.  Each "blade" has one connection to each of these switches.  The switches each have two uplinks to separate Nexus 5K switches.  We run numerous VLANs over these uplinks (both storage -- NFS and production traffic).  Ideally we'd have physical separation for storage and front end traffic, but they are 10GbE lines and things were architected to just send everything over the two links with VLAN segmentation only.  We're not close to saturating the lines.

Within ESXi, there are two dvSwitches using teaming... traffic is balanced based on physical NIC load.  In thinking about this it's not clear that this is the right setting for accessing NFS-based datastores on our NetApp filers, but is how things were set up originally and has been working OK for a long time.

Our network admins tell us that at some point, the MAC address associated with the Storage vmkernel NIC showed up in two different places.  The Nexus switches saw this as a loop and apparently this triggered all of our issues.

I'm trying to wrap my head around how that MAC could have showed up two places at once?  Could our use of Physical NIC Load balancing be the cause?  One would think it would expose the MAC only one direction and wouldn't be flipping back between the two ports unless there was sufficient load (highly unlikely that we'd see 75% load on a 10GbE link in our environment).

Too many gaps in the above tale?  Just looking for some ideas on where to start troubleshooting first.  We're working with VMware Support, Dell and Cisco, but none are seeing anything obviously wrong in "their" layer of the stack.

V2V - HyperV to VMware - the operation experienced a network error

$

I am working on converting my HyperV environment to VMware and i am running into an issue with a couple host.  When i try to convert them, it fails at 1% and the error i am getting is "the operation experienced a network error".  I have converted other HyperV servers to the same Cluster, as well as other virtual machines from the same HyperV host without an error.  For some reason, just one of the machines on the HyperV host are giving me this error.  I checked for firewall rules on the individual virtual machines, but i do not understand why the virtual machine would have any affect on it since the virtual machine is powered down and all communication is going through the host HyperV.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you

Eric

We have upgraded one of VCO servers to 5.5, but are not experiencing intermittent 404's when you click on the link to approve the workflow. Doesn't happen 100% of the time, but enough to be an issue. Any insight appreciated

Hello,

I want to retreive a list of vm's in a virtual machine DRS group. I found the following oneliner but the output is empty. I am using Powercli 5.5 release 1 and vSphere 5.5 update1

(Get-Cluster CLUSTER).ExtensionData.ConfigurationEx.Group| ?{$_.vm} | %{" GROUP ${$_.name} found in this cluster"; foreach($CurrentVM in $_.vm) { (Get-View-id $CurrentVm).name } }

Startup/Shutdown of VM in vSphere

$

Hi!

This is theory question, because  I can't find or understand description of this process, if shutdown was  initiated by ESXi 'Virtual Machine Startup and Shutdown' policy...

1st question - My opinion, it's the easiest way to correctly shutdown VI via UPS command via 'Virtual Machine Startup and Shutdown' policy, because we need only to initiate ESXi shutdown process from UPS (via vMA) and ESXi will shutdown all VMs correctly by itself. Configuration looks simple: one time add all VMs to 'Any Order' before UPS event will happens and it's all  (yes, I know about 'Automatic Startup' limitations in DRS environment, but 'Any Order' mostly acceptable.  )  Am I correct?

2nd and main question - if  'Default shutdown delay' with 'Shutdown action' set to 'Guest Shutdown'. How this process going on? ESXi sent 'shutdown' command to VM and it's waiting 'Default shutdown delay'-time before it will send next 'shutdown' command to the next VM. But what it will do with the first VM if it still shutting down? Will it send 'Power Off' command to first VM or what?

But when ESXi will decide to shutdown itself? After the final 'Default shutdown delay'-time will expire or not? And all VMs, which  are not yet switched off, will receive final 'Power Off' command or these VMs will receive real 'Power Off' when ESXi will be stopped?

Question about Traffic Shaping [ credits ]

$

I am trying to work out how the traffic shaping works, but the manuals are only talking about credits but no where any examples.

Having a VM and put it on his own [Virtual Machine] port group, with following parameters:

Average bandwidth:  10000 Kbits

Peak bandwidth:      25000 Kbits

Burst size:               4096 Kbytes

- How to get credits [ I understand it is adding when the VM uses less then the Average bandwidth, and what is the credit in figures, is it kbits or time to burst?

- Assume the VM is having a download started for a certain amount of time, will it start at Average speed, then go straight to the Burst and for how long, when will it fall back to Peak bandwidth? Sorry so many questions.. I find it very difficult to work out other then testing how this works, could anyone shine a light on this please?

Thanks a lot for your precious time.

Traffic Shaping concepts:

  • Average Bandwidth: Target traffic rate cap that the switch tries to enforce. Every time a client uses less than the defined Average Bandwidth, credit builds up.
  • Peak Bandwidth: Extra bandwidth available, above the Average Bandwidth, for a short burst. The availability of the burst depends on credit accumulated so far.
  • Burst Size: Amount of traffic that can be transmitted or received at Peak speed. By combining Peak Bandwidth and Burst Size, you can calculate the maximum allowed time for the burst.

VMware vCloud Director lost connection with AMQP Server

Hi Community,

actually I have the problem that vCloud Director send the message "VMware vCloud Director lost connection with AMQP Server "servername"" when the backup starts respectively a virtual machine snapshot of the AMQP server machine is done. I have tested that a snapshot results in a one ping loss.

Is there a possibility to increase the timeout value for vCD of sending this message?

Thanks in advance!

The redo log is corrupted / Consolidate error / Bad file descriptor (589833)

Hello VMware community,

after a system crash and replacement of a faulty hardware RAID controller I'm having trouble to get a VM back online. After trying to start the VM I'm getting the error message:

The redo log of datastoragevm-000001.vmdk is corrupted. If the problem still persists, discard the redo log.

Trying to consolidate the VM disks leads to the following error:

Consolidate virtual machine disk files: A general system error occurred: Input/output error

The originally snapshot file causing the error in the first place was datastoragevm-000001.vmdk before I created a new snapshot and tried to merge this back as described in a KB article. According to another KB article I've already tried to clone the vmdk with "vmkfstools --clonevirtualdisk datastoragevm-000002.vmdk datastoragevm-recovered.vmdk -d eagerzeroedthick" but this leads to the following error:

Clone: 15% done.Failed to clone disk: Bad file descriptor (589833).

Any help would be great.

David

VSAN SSD Compatibility List model, cannot identify the actual part number from vendor

I am on the way to setup VSAN in our site, which we need to purchase SSD for so.

In the compatibility list, we can find some models e.g. IBM SSDSC2BA800G3IB

However, we cannot associate the model no. with IBM part number something like 90Y8648.

I searched the model no. but could find the related information.

VSAN_compatibility.jpg

IBM part number

Solid State Drive

IBM 128GB SATA 2.5'' SFF HS SSD

Do you have any idea how we check that? Thanks.

While trying to load a file upto a datastore folder I received the following cryptic error:

Failed to log into nfc server

I am unclear as to what this is since there is only 1 hit for this in the vmware forums (2 hits on google).  Nothing really which really answers what this means or how to fix it in my situation.  Is it possible that nfc was mispelled and it was supposed to say nfs?  Even then I am still unclear how to solve the problem.

Thanks,

I am done upto the step of  SSO authentication but I am not able to proceed with adding license, It gives error "Command execution failed with unexpected error: 503 Service Temporarily Unavailable"

Also I am not able to see any services in the services tab of management console.
